Bridget Black is another example of the long-term benefits from student leadership education while in high school.  Throughout her experiences at Providence College, Bridget brought the energy, optimism, and unbridled enthusiasm that she learned to express while working with the MassSTAR organization.  As the chair of a major on-campus committee as well as a varsity member of the division one track and cross country teams, Bridget sought to empower her peers in all situations to believe in themselves and in their valuable contributions to their surroundings.  As a master's of Higher Education Administration candidate at the Lynch School of Education at Boston College, Bridget continues to serve as a student leader, acting as the President & Executive Director of the Graduate Education Association.  Many years after she first participated in student leadership activities such as MassSTAR, Bridget continues to draw on the lessons she learned in order to achieve her goals.

Mary Wall '02
Abington High School '04
Boston College '08

Mary Wall is currently a senior at Boston College, majoring in political science. Mary attended the Massachusetts Youth Leadership Foundation's MassSTAR conference in June of 2002 and returned the next year as a student partner. Since then, she has remained very active in the organization, taking on increased responsibility each year. During high school, Mary was quite an involved student, doling out hours of her time to musical ensembles, volunteer organizations, as well as student leadership conferences, all in addition to a part-time job. After graduating second in her class at Abington High School, she continued onto Chestnut Hill to find a challenging and enriching learning experience. Having one year under her belt now, she already finds herself heavily involved in a number of activities as well as deeply engaged in her academics. As a sophomore at Boston College, Mary has participated in a service-immersion trip in Annotto Bay, Jamaica, teaching first graders in a summer camp for two weeks, as well as serving as a section leader in the Boston College Marching Band.

Mary looks forward to MassSTAR's growth in the near future. She actively looks ahead to see the promising future in this ever-flourishing organization, positively altering the lives of high-school sophomores from around the state by catalyzing change in the lives of people around her. Mary feels she is a person empowered to make a positive change in an often in just world. She believes MassSTAR gave given her the strength, courage, resources, and determination to make a difference in the lives of others, and to strive to be a person for others always.

Hannah Desrochers '03
Georgetown Junio-Senior High School '05
Simmons College '09

Hannah is currently a junior at Simmons College in Boston.  She is a Dean’s List nursing student and works as a Nursing Assistant in a center for people with Alzheimer’s and Dementia.  In June 2003, Hannah was nominated as class president and was selected by Georgetown High School to attend the MassSTAR conference.  MassSTAR enhanced many facets of Hannah’s character, taught her the fundamentals of leadership, and helped channel her energy into local organizations.  MassSTAR challenged Hannah to help shape her community: she has become a regional top fundraiser for America’s Walk for Diabetes; coaches a summer league varsity basketball team; and attended an alternative college spring break, working with Habitat for Humanity to build homes.  The association and individuals of MassSTAR continue to inspire Hannah to seek opportunities at home and abroad that make the community closer and stronger.
