MassSTAR Empowered Citizen Grants

At Massachusetts Youth Leadership Foundation, we have always focused on bettering Massachusetts communities by empowering student leaders to take initiative and find creative solutions to problems they identify in their schools, towns and cities.

The MassSTAR Empowered Citizen Grants Program presents the opportunity for young leaders to develop a community service project from start to finish and make a real improvement in their community.  Young leaders who have attended any MassSTAR Conference may complete the initial application.  Once the applications are received, the MYLF Board of Directors will review the applications and select a group of semifinalists.  The semi finalists will have the opportunity to further develop the design for their service project and submit a proposal for the MassSTAR Empowered Citizen Grants.  Finalists will present their ideas before a panel of MYLF and community leaders.  Winners of the grant will be announced at the MassSTAR 2010 Conference at Lasell College in June.

The deadline to submit the initial application is December 1, 2009.

Please contact Melissa Kaye, Director of MassSTAR Empowered Citizen Grants, with any questions. melissa.kaye@massstar.org

Alumni Service Challenge

The Presidential Service Award

Massachusetts Youth Leadership Foundation is a certifying organization for the President’s Volunteer Service Award.  All qualifying individuals will be recognized at the MassSTAR Citizenship Conference in June.

"Recognizing and honoring volunteers sets a standard for service to others. It encourages a sustained commitment to civic participation and inspires others to make volunteering a central part of their lives. The President's Volunteer Service Award recognizes individuals, families, and groups that have achieved a certain standard – measured by the number of hours served over a 12-month period or cumulative hours earned over the course of a lifetime." - President's Volunteer Service Award

The National Congressional Award

The Congressional Award is the United States Congress' award for young Americans. Open to 14-23 year olds, it is non-partisan, voluntary, and non-competitive.  MassSTAR Alumni (and all Outstanding youth!) are encouraged to set personal goals in the 4 program areas of Volunteer Public Service, Personal Development, Physical Fitness, and Expedition/Exploration and work at your own pace towards a certificate or medal.

Working towards the award involves keeping track of your hours for activities that you are likely already pursuing! It also presents a supportive framework to take a positive risk and try a new activity!

"Make A Difference Day" Conference

Picture
On Saturday, October 24th, MassSTAR will host its annual one-day conference on national “Make a Difference Day”. The conference is an opportunity to reconnect with friends from the spring conference, rekindle your enthusiasm and PMA, and in the spirit of the day, make a difference! The day will consist of engaging speakers, interactive workshops, and a service project for the Wa Area Development Association. Delegates are encouraged to bring friends and members of student organizations they’re involved with.

Life is Good with MassSTAR!

The MassSTAR Alumni Association participated at the Life is good Festival held this summer on the Boston Common. The alumni volunteered on two different teams. One team was the Green Team. This team was in charge of educating the public about recycling at the festival and the environment. Two other teams were in charge of handling the balloons for the festival. Balloons were definitely in high demand all day long! An interesting fact was that the balloons were actually latex free and were made out of sap! All in all the day was hot, but the alumni association had a great time volunteering for Project Joy and the Life is good Foundation! To check out pictures from the event, please click here
