MassSTAR Citizenship Conference 2011

Welcome!

Dear 2011 MassSTAR Alumni,

I would like to warmly welcome you to the MassSTAR Alumni Association! The Alumni Association is an outlet for alumni to exercise their leadership skills while also building a community of empowered citizens and friends. The Alumni Association hosts simultaneous meetings every month at UMass Amherst and Boston University. The concerns and interests of alumni provide content for these meetings; alumni can use the monthly meetings as a space to discuss social issues in their communities, or to brainstorm fundraising strategies for service projects in their schools. Alumni are invited to plan relevant group discussions or activities for the meetings. Specific information about upcoming meetings will be sent via email on a monthly basis.

The Alumni Association also seeks to bring alumni together through group service. We already have several days of group service planned for the next year, and welcome alumni to send upcoming volunteer events or ideas for partner organizations to Samantha.curtis@massstar.org.
Parents and family members have the opportunity to support the MassSTAR Alumni Association through the Parents’ Alumni Association. During these meetings, members discuss creative fundraising and student outreach, as well as ways to strengthen the Alumni Association.

We look forward to seeing you at the next Alumni Association meeting in July!

Best,
Samantha Curtis
Alumni Association Liaison

Volunteering This Summer

Looking for volunteer ideas this summer?  The Massachusetts Youth Leadership Foundation has some great ideas for you and your friends and family!
  • Spend a few hours cleaning up a local beach, park, or playground.
  • Offer to mow the lawn, feed birds, water plants, etc. for your elderly neighbors – especially on those hot days!
  • Participate the Boston City Year Serve-a-thon.
  • Conduct a food drive in your neighborhood to donate to a local food pantry.
  • Volunteer to help out for the afternoon at a local food bank, shelter, soup kitchen, etc.
  • Offer to babysit for a neighborhood family and give the parents some alone time.
  • Volunteer as an assistant coach for a little league sports team or sports camp.
  • Gather some friends and family and write thank you notes to the American Military troops serving our country.
  • Volunteer for a shift at Project Bread’s Walk for Hunger, the Jimmy Fund Walk, the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, etc.
  • Check out the volunteer opportunities with the MassSTAR Alumni Association!
