Make a Difference Day 2011![]() Francis Chapuredima
On November 19th, 2011, the Massachusetts Youth Leadership Foundation hosted its annual “Make A Difference Day” Conference at Boston University. The day was filled with workshops and speakers revolving around the theme “Leaving Your Own Trail.” The idea sprung from the wise words of Ralph Waldo Emerson, who once said "Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail."
At the three- day conference in June, we focused on "taking the road less travelled". Now, we are ready to leave our own trail behind. The two concepts also reflect the idea of being a follower before becoming a leader. We followed an established path before creating our own. At the conference, attendees brought in donations for Cradles to Crayons – an organization that MassSTAR volunteered with over the summer. The day kicked off with a leadership compass activity, which helped define and recognize different leadership skills and styles. Other events included a visit from The City School to discuss a community involvement seminar and two amazing and inspiring speakers Kijana Rose and Francis Chapuredima. Each one brought energetic and insightful messages of leadership and community involvement on the local and global scales of life. There was also the distribution of the Presidential Volunteer Service Awards to those who have volunteered more than 100 hours in one year. The day concluded with Samantha Curtis, a MassSTAR alumna who has actively left her own trail both outside and inside the MassSTAR community. Overall, Make A Difference Day was a day when about 30 members of the MassSTAR community came to gather together again, be inspired and have fun. Fall 2011 Newsletter
